Gum Treatment
Hygienist Stephanie will explain your gum treatment procedure to you before she begins.
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can adversely affect your overall health. Many patients don’t even realize they have gum disease until the damage is irreversible.
Gum disease can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, low-birth-weight or preterm babies, and can contribute to blood sugar control problems for diabetics. Additionally, gum disease causes bleeding, swollen gums and tooth loss.
Pain-free laser gum cleaning
Dr. Suway has many years of experience treating gum disease. He can help you prevent or eliminate it with gentle, painless laser treatment.
We use laser technology to handle mild to intermediate gum disease. Our special laser is designed for the soft-tissues of the mouth and can treat gum disease before it becomes severe. Treatments are done right in our lakeside office.
Our experienced hygienist, Stephanie performs deep cleaning gum treatment. She takes her time to ensure that your teeth are cleaned thoroughly beneath the gum line. Patients regularly comment on how gentle her service is.
How does the laser work?
The tiny laser is aimed between the gum tissue and teeth where it painlessly removes and kills bacteria that cause gum disease. The small laser is able to penetrate deeply into pockets between the gums and teeth, ensuring that bacteria has no place to hide.
Because the laser kills bacteria, it is also used to sterilize the gums before or during root canals, cavity treatment, and other procedures.

Advanced Gum Treatment
If additional gum treatment is needed, Dr. Suway may prescribe special antibacterial solutions, mouth rinses, or more frequent in-office cleanings.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
Poor oral hygiene, irregular professional dental cleanings, smoking or chewing tobacco, taking certain medications, defective fillings, crooked teeth and systemic diseases are contributing factors to gum disease.
Some warning signs of gum disease are:
-
Gums that bleed during brushing
-
Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
-
Persistent bad breath or bad taste
-
Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
-
Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
A healthy lifestyle, regular brushing and flossing and routine checkups at the dentist are the best way to keep your gums healthy and avoid gum disease. Deep cleaning may also be recommended.
If you suspect that you have gum disease or if you have any of the symptoms above, schedule an appointment with Dr. Suway right away.
